(Negara Brunei Darussalam)

Southeast Asia’s smallest state in terms of population has one of the highest per capita GDPs in the region. Highly politically stable, it has been ruled by same family for over 600 years.

Its wealth is based on crude oil and natural gas extraction and refinery, which accounts for over half of its GDP and over 90 percent of exports.

However, its small size, remote location to other regional markets and comparative lack of openness compared to Hong Kong and Singapore, mean that it generally holds little interest for foreign businesses.

Population: 402,000
Capital City: Bandar Seri Begawan (pop. 22,000)
Government: Constitutional Sultanate
Languages: Malay (official), English, Chinese
GDP per Capita (PPP): $50,000+
